Pysanky Egg Class
The tradition of pysanky (from the Ukrainian meaning “to write”) goes back 1000’s of years predating Christianity in the region when the practice was a popular way to celebrate the arrival of spring. It has evolved into an Easter celebration.
The art of “writing pysanky” entails the application of lines drawn with melted beeswax on the surface of the egg over which a coating of egg dye is applied. This process is repeated through a succession of lines of wax and progressively darker shades of dye until the egg is covered with wax and dye. At the end of this process all layers of wax are removed to reveal the multiple colors and patterns. The patterns used on the eggs are symbolic of various concepts such as health, wisdom, joy, faith, prayer, and eternal life.
Helen Jones (who has been engaging in this art form since 2015) is offering classes in writing pysanky to anyone interested in learning this technique* and enriching their spiritual journey. The classes will be offered in the parish hall of St. John’s Episcopal Church, 18 Jackson Street in Sylva, on February 21, March 7 and March 21 from 1:30-4pm. The cost will be $15 to cover the cost of materials. Several patterns will be offered from which to choose. These will be patterns ranging from beginner level to more advanced patterns. In the span of one session, participants should be able to complete an egg and have it dry and ready to take home to display in the stand provided.
The class size is limited to 8 students per session so that everyone can get individual attention and coaching. You may register by contacting Helen at hhjrwj@gmail.com or posting your name in a slot on the class roster on the sign up sheet on the bulletin board.
*No innate artistic ability is required. The skills involved are not gender-specific. Be aware that this process involves candle flames, hot melted wax, and the careful handling of “blown” (emptied-out) eggs.
